Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. It is a condition that results from excessive stress or strain on the plantar fascia, which is a structure that runs across the bottom of your foot. Plantar fasciitis causes heel and/or arch pain that most commonly occurs when walking after periods of inactivity, when getting out of bed in the morning, and when you are on your feet for an extended time. Patient often describe experiencing a “sharp” or “stabbing” or “aching” type of pain. Although some people refer to plantar fasciitis as “heel spurs” or “heel spur syndrome”, those with this condition may not actually have a heel spur. Although symptoms from plantar fasciitis can be progressive or severe, there are many treatment options available for this condition, and the overwhelming majority of patients experience a complete resolution of their pain without having any type of surgery. However, please be aware that there are other conditions that can cause heel pain, so it is important to have your heel pain evaluated. You may reach our office at 586-298-1585.
