This type of injury is very common. However, it is possible to also break a bone (or bones) in the ankle or foot with the twisting injury that most people associate with condition. The only way to know that the injury resulted in an ankle sprain and not a fracture is to have x-rays taken. Ankle sprains result in injury to the ankle ligaments, which are what connect the bones in the area. They may also result in tendon or cartilage damage as well. Returning to activity prematurely after this injury can lead to prolonged or recurrent pain.
